Benefits Check-Up
Everyday, Benefits Check-Up helps thousands of seniors find programs to help pay for prescription drugs, health care, utility and other costs. This free service from the National Council on Aging provides free, confidential personalized report on benefits eligibility including a personalized report on prescription assistance programs the user may be eligible for. To complete the confidential online checkup, you will need to know your income for the previous year and your current monthly income. They do not ask for account information or other personal identification information.

American Geriatrics Society Foundation for Health in Aging

National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC)
Established in 1996, The NAC is a non-profit coalition of national organizations focusing on issues of family caregiving by conducting research, policy analysis, program development and public awareness about caregiving. National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA)

Founded in 1987, this organization establishes local, state and national partnerships committed to building quality long-term, home and community based services. Site features many free downloadable publications and a free telephone learning series that helps caregivers who listen to national experts from the comfort of their home and then are able to ask questions at the end of the session.
Shirley Board
A free online tool to help caregivers keep pertinent information online which can be accessed anywhere the caregiver has access to the Internet. Caregivers can keep a journal, store photos, keep prescription and medical information, and to store important documents such as POAs.
Today's Caregiver Magazine
This company's magazine and website includes extensive topic specific newsletters, online discussion lists, back issue articles of Today's Caregiver magazine, chat rooms and an online store. All of the products are developed for caregivers, about caregivers and by caregivers. You can sign up to receive their free newsletter by e-mail.
Well Spouse Foundation
This non-profit, membership organization provides support to caregiving wives, husbands and partners of chronically ill and/or disabled people. You do not have to be a member to access valuable information, though part of their site you do have to be a member to access. Their mentorship program links new spousal caregivers with experienced caregivers.

Many charity names sound similar. Some of them use a high percent of donations for 'administrative' costs instead of helping the advertised recipients. It's important to know where your donation dollars really go, because many Illinois residents rely on the services provided by legitimate charities. The Federal Trade Commission manages the National Do Not Call Registry and it gives you a choice about whether you want to receive telemarketing calls at home. Senior Medicare Patrol
The SMP (Senior Medicare Patrol) Program empowers consumers to prevent healthcare fraud. Program staff and volunteers help people with Medicare and Medicaid to:
- 1) PROTECT themselves from Medicare & Medicaid fraud, waste, and abuse.
- 2) DETECT Medicare & Medicaid fraud, waste, and abuse.
- 3) REPORT Medicare & Medicaid fraud, waste, and abuse.
The Administration on Aging provides funding to SMP programs in all 50 states; Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico; Guam; and the Virgin Islands. The Illinois SMP Program is located at AgeOptions, the Area Agency on Aging for Suburban Cook County. AgeOptions works with several other agencies to provide information about healthcare fraud in Illinois. These agencies are: Illinois Area Agencies on Aging, Catholic Charities, Senior Services Associates, the Coalition of Limited English Speaking Elderly, and the Illinois Network of Centers for Independent Living.

Comprehensive Health Insurance Program (CHIP) / Illinois

Illinois Circuit Breaker / Illinois Cares Rx

The Illinois Department on Aging's Circuit Breaker program's benefits include a license plate discount and prescription assistance for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Prescription assistance includes payment of the Medicare D-plan premium; a reduced co-pay; and the program pays 80% of drug costs during the gap period (commonly known as the donut hole). There are income restrictions for this program. You can apply online or download an application for mail in application. Applications filed online take about 3 weeks to process, paper applications take about 3 months. Senior Services Associates staff will gladly answer you questions and help you apply for this valuable program.
Illinois Rx Buying Club
Participants in this program receive discounts on prescription drugs, both brand name and generic. Savings average 20% although individual discounts may vary. To qualify for the Illinois Rx Buying Club, you must be an Illinois resident and your household income is equal to or less than 300% of the Federal Poverty Level.
National Council on Patient Information and Education (NCPIE)
The NCOIE is a non-profit coalition with goals of educating consumers on how to make sound decisions regarding medicines, drug safety, etc.
NeedyMeds
NeedyMeds is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1997 and is dedicated to helping people who cannot afford medicine or healthcare. Their site has information on patient assistance programs that provide free or low-cost medicine to people who are uninsured or underinsured. This organization doesn't directly supply medicine or financial assistance, but helps link people to programs that do provide those services. The site also provides information on assistance programs, such as discount drug cards, disease specific assistance, directory of free or low-cost clinics and downloadable coupons for nearly 300 drugs.

Social Security Extra Help Prescription Assistance

Medicare beneficiaries are eligible for the extra help if they have limited income and resources. The extra help can increase their cost savings by paying for part of the monthly premiums, annual deductibles and prescription co-payments under the new prescription drug program. The SMP (Senior Medicare Patrol) Program empowers consumers to prevent healthcare fraud. Program staff and volunteers help people with Medicare and Medicaid to:
