Open Volunteer Assignments
Senior Services Associates provides many services to the most vulnerable in our communities in an effort to help them remain living in their home as long as safely manageable, with the best quality of life possible. Thanks to the generosity of our many volunteers we reach thousands of seniors. Sadly, the needs often exceed the number of volunteers available. Your interest in volunteering is greatly appreciated. McHenry County Volunteer Needs
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in McHenry County has a wide range of volunteer opportunities for those who are 55 plus and willing to share their life experiences. Call (800) 339-3200 for information on any of these assignments.

Algonquin
>Algonquin/LITH Interfaith Food Pantry Assist clients with basic forms, record keeping and food packing, stock shelves.
>Eastgate Manor:
Activity department help with crafts, play Chess, assist with building models, Bingo, Friday night movie and popcorn.

Barrington
>Hospice of Northeastern Illinois:
General office assistance is needed: filing, typing addressing envelopes, phone calling, and reception relief.

Cary
>Cary Park District's/Kraus Senior Center -
Computer tutor to assist seniors, monthly help with theme parties.
>Head Start:
Assist at the site with reading or teacher assistant.
>Homework Headquarters (Cary United Methodist Church):
Work with Latino elementary school students on homework and other educational games.
>Prairie Hill School:
Reading and math tutors during school hours, also after school (3:15-4:15) homework helpers for 5th and 6th grade students.
>Salvation Army:
Help at site by packing meals and drivers to deliver meals to seniors who are homebound. (needed during winter months)
>Home of the Sparrow (Sparrow's Nest):
Assist at resale shop, sorting donations, pricing, running the cash register, and displaying items on the floor for sale.

Crystal Lake
>Assisi Animal Foundation:
Animal assist therapy at nursing homes. "Dog Bite Prevention" - program presented to students. Maintain animals (cats and dogs) and their sleeping areas, kennels, feeding equipment and exercise areas. Transport animals to the homes of seniors who are homebound.
>Bernotas Middle School:
One-on-one tutors for reading, math or other subjects, teacher assistants in various classrooms, and bi-lingual volunteers.
>Bethesda Thrift Shop:
Cashier, sorting donations, pricing, stocking shelves.
>Big Brothers/Big Sisters:
Lunchtime mentors meet one time per week with identified students during the lunch hour to have lunch together, talk, and play games.
>Crystal Lake Park District:
Land restoration, plant propagation, and office assistance.
>Crystal Pines Nursing Home:
One on one friendly visiting and assist with activities.
>Fair Oaks Nursing Home:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday Bingo helpers and Friendly Visitors.
>Faith In Action of McHenry County:
Answer phones and coordinate service requests for volunteers.
>Good Samaritan Ministry:
Verify information in order to process applications for financial assistance (*men are especially needed for this agency's needs).
>Hannah Beardsley Middle School:
After school tutors.
>Head Start:
Assist at the site with reading or teacher assistant.
>Home of the Sparrow (Shelter):
Direct children's activities; help with building maintenance, landscaping, and moving assistance. Office: Clerical assignments: answering phones, filing, bulk mailings, data entry. Development: Fundraising, special events, and marketing.
>Horizons for the Blind:
Computer entry, public relations, reading, proof reading, art work, marketing, grant writing, handyman, read for cassettes (Spanish and English).
>Lakeside Legacy Foundation:
Docent/Tour Guides
>McHenry County Animal Control & Adoption Center:
Data input, newsletter development, office assistance, special events, assist with adoption of animals, dog and cat socialization and grooming, cage and kennel cleaning - Saturday volunteers needed.

Lunchtime mentors needed in McHenry and Johnsburg. Mentors meet one time per week to have lunch together, talk, and play games.
>Centegra - Northern Illinois Medical Center
Various hospital assignments; Transport patients to various departments, reception/greeter, play games with patients, clerical, resale and gift shop and newspaper delivery.
>Family Service
Volunteer to make phone calls to remind clients of appointments.
>Garden Quarter Neighborhood Resource Center
Homework help for children ages 7-17. Work with children on arts & crafts, sports, cooking and baking.
>Head Start
Assist at the site with reading or teacher assistant.
>Heritage Woods of McHenry
Reception help, special events and activities helpers.

Assist with special events and recreation programs. Calling Bingo and driving Angelus Van to church services on Sunday.

Assist Pioneer Center participants with Line Dance and exercise class.
>Odyssey Health Care
This hospice program is looking for volunteers who will act as friendly visitors with patients at Alden Terrace.

Assist individuals with mental and physical disabilities learn reading, writing, budgeting and life skills.
>Salvation Army
Assist site manager with packing meals and substitute drivers to deliver meals to homebound seniors.

Assistance with activities, parties and programs, leading programs on crafts, painting, etc. Friendly visitors, and drivers to take seniors to necessary appointments.

Assist in care and handling of therapy horses used for at-risk and challenged youth and mentors for youth. Assist with care of small animals (donkeys, goats, deer and rabbits). Handyman and volunteers to work in the barn and in the garden. Assist with clerical tasks in the office.

Periodic trainings are available for those interested in being Court Appointed Special Advocates for children of McHenry County.

Various hospital assignments; cashier, transporting patients within hospital, distribute books and videos, greet patients and families, clerical needs.
>Centegra Resale Shop -
Sorting donations, pricing items, and displaying items on the floor for sale.
>Challenger Learning Center:
Mission Specialist"-assist teacher in conducting Rendezvous with a Comet mission for school kids. Assist with both Mission Control and Space Station Simulators. Greet visitors, answer phone, cashier and customer service at the "Blast Off Gift Shop".

Assist at day center, clerical support, childcare, fundraising, seasonal shelter assistance.
>Prairie State Legal Services:
Clerical skills, computer input, filing and phone reception.
>Salvation Army:
Deliver meals to homebound seniors.
>Turning Point:
Child care, food pantry assistance, clerical support, fundraising, building and ground maintenance, housekeeping. Direct service volunteers: courthouse advocates, answer crisis line calls, and run support groups.
>University of Illinois Extension:
Offers a program for youth interested in technology, science and engineering. Current volunteer coordinator is looking for other adults interested in technology to provide co-leadership in education and coordination. A volunteer who is interested in building life skills in our youth and has knowledge of technology, science and/or engineering.
>Valley Hi Nursing Home:
Read to or visit with residents, assist with shopping trips and with Activities.
>Verda Dierzen Early Learning Center:
One-on-one read aloud program to and with pre-kindergarten students.
>Woodstock Food Pantry:
>Serve pantry clients on Mon., Wed. Fri. from 9:00am - 3:00pm.
>Woodstock School District:
Mentoring program is looking for those willing to make a difference in the lives of our children. After-school program for middle and high school students.

Court Appointed Special Advocates for children of McHenry County.

Friendly visits and phone calls, errands, light housekeeping, minor home repairs, yard work, transportation, web page maintenance.
>Hospice of Northeastern Illinois:
Respite care, patient visits, caregiver support, phone calls.
>Literacy Volunteer Program:
Tutor participants with language barriers in the English as a Second Language program, literacy program, daycare assistance and clerical help.
>McHenry County Conservation District:
Stewards for land restoration at various locations, bluebird and plant monitors,
>McHenry County Dept. of Health (Medical Reserve Corps):
Health professionals.
>Pioneer Center (VOICE):
Sexual Assault Counselor to answer 24-hr hotline and provide medical and legal advocacy supporting victims at hospital call-outs.
>Senior Medicare Patrol:
McHenry County - Educate the public on Medicare/Medicaid fraud.
>Senior Services Associates:
Friendly visitors matched with seniors who are homebound. Transporting seniors to various appointments and grocery shopping. Volunteers are needed to assist with small home repairs.
